Born in Hebden Bridge he attended Stubbings School and the former Central Street Middle School. A railway worker for 44 years he was called up in 1943 and was involved with hospital trains and troop movements. He was later shipped off to Burma to help restore the shattered transport system. He was well known for his talks and slide shows to local organisations throughout Calderdale. The Stainland Branch left the Calder Valley Main Line at Greetland and opened in 1875 up to near Brookroyd Mills at Holywell Green, whose owners, the Shaws, had influenced the line’s construction. Although less than two miles long it was heavily engineered with two substantial stone viaducts; West Vale 13 arches and Holywell Green 14 arches. The single platform station at Holywell Green was poorly placed down a steep hill well below Stainland.

Despite in 1907 the introduction of railmotors the Branch was unable to cope first with competition from electric trams and then from motor buses and closed to passengers in 1929 and fully in 1959. This picture shows how the Railmotor coach is articulated to the loco and driver's position when running coach first.</text>

<text>The Making of Todmorden’ was an exhibition staged in June 1993 at Todmorden Town Hall. Initiated by Jack Taylor MBE and Todmorden Information Centre Trust it used material researched and compiled by Jack Taylor, Betty Savage, Derek Proctor, Dennis O'Neill and members of the Todmorden Antiquarian Society. We are also indebted to the Fielden family and Roger Birch, who provided many of the images. Roger also did much of the work in putting the exhibition together. Opened by Nobel prizewinner Sir Geoffrey Wilkinson, the exhibition received great acclaim. It tells the story of Todmorden’s rich industrial heritage and its people and the success of the exhibition was in no small part due to the detailed research undertaken. It is a fine body of work and is presented here as a tribute to all those who contributed to the exhibition.
