LOCATION: Thongsbridge

REF: HU 28

GRID REF: 149 098

CLASSIFICATION: D

CONDITION: Semi used

APPROX DATE OF SITE AND BUILDINGS: Mid-late 19C

DESCRIPTION/HISTORY: This woollen mill site next to the Holme dates from c1840-50. A typical four storey (plus attic), mid 19C building survives, and the remainder of the site is mostly late 19C, with a number of buildings of various sizes. Some parts appear to have been recently demolished, including the chimney.

PRESENT USE AND POTENTIAL: The mill has now been subdivided into a number of small workshops/units. Improvements and refurbishment work is taking place, although this seems to have involved some demolition.

<text>The Making of Todmorden’ was an exhibition staged in June 1993 at Todmorden Town Hall. Initiated by Jack Taylor MBE and Todmorden Information Centre Trust it used material researched and compiled by Jack Taylor, Betty Savage, Derek Proctor, Dennis O'Neill and members of the Todmorden Antiquarian Society. We are also indebted to the Fielden family and Roger Birch, who provided many of the images. Roger also did much of the work in putting the exhibition together. Opened by Nobel prizewinner Sir Geoffrey Wilkinson, the exhibition received great acclaim. It tells the story of Todmorden’s rich industrial heritage and its people and the success of the exhibition was in no small part due to the detailed research undertaken. It is a fine body of work and is presented here as a tribute to all those who contributed to the exhibition. <text>NAME: ALBION MILL

LOCATION: Stackhills

REF: CD32

GRID REF: 939 241

CLASSIFICATION: D

CONDITION: Fully used

APPROX DATE OF SITE AND BUILDINGS: Mid-late 19C

DESCRIPTION/HISTORY: There are various buildings on this site, including a fair example of a stone built, two storey mid 19C mill building. This has a later extension on the northern end. There is also a larger, late 19C triple gabled building with modern glass frontage, weaving sheds and a circular stone chimney. The site probably dates from around the 1840’s as a cotton weaving factory.

PRESENT USE AND POTENTIAL: The site is now occupied by a firm of graphic arts suppliers. The early building is of some interest, and the site is adjacent to the canal towpath.
