He was well known for his talks and slide shows to local organisations throughout Calderdale. He was a trustee of the Alice Longstaff Gallery Collection and together with Frank Woolrych, helped stage many popular exhibitions of photographs in the Hebden Bridge Tourist Information Office.</text>

The Society organises a winter programme from September to March on Wednesdays at the Methodist Church in Hebden Bridge at 7:30 pm.

The Society's archive and library is housed at The Birchcliffe Centre, Hebden Bridge. The collection is available for members to use on the second Wednesday and fourth Saturday of each month.

Donations to the archive are welcomed. Contributions of photos and documents, even from the recent past.

A catalogue of the Society's is available on their website..

One of the many projects the Society is currently working on is the Gibson and Sutcliffe papers. The materials had been lying in a room at Croft House in Hebden Bridge, undisturbed for over 50 years. One collection belonged to Abraham Gibson of Greenwood Lee and the other to Sutcliffe & Sutcliffe, architects.

Members of the Society are also transcribing gravestones in Heptonstall churchyard, providing easy access to local information for genealogists.</text>

<text>The Making of Todmorden’ was an exhibition staged in June 1993 at Todmorden Town Hall. Initiated by Jack Taylor MBE and Todmorden Information Centre Trust it used material researched and compiled by Jack Taylor, Betty Savage, Derek Proctor, Dennis O'Neill and members of the Todmorden Antiquarian Society. We are also indebted to the Fielden family and Roger Birch, who provided many of the images. Roger also did much of the work in putting the exhibition together. Opened by Nobel prizewinner Sir Geoffrey Wilkinson, the exhibition received great acclaim. It tells the story of Todmorden’s rich industrial heritage and its people and the success of the exhibition was in no small part due to the detailed research undertaken. It is a fine body of work and is presented here as a tribute to all those who contributed to the exhibition. In the late 19th Century every Chapel and Sunday School had its library, Mutual Improvement Society, Debating Society, lectures and Musical Events. All social events and outings centred round the Sunday School.

In the early 20th Century the Chapel and Sunday School still held the loyalty of their members, but improved transport (waggonettes and charabancs) and improved financial circumstances, gave opportunities to travel out of town and take part in Male Voice Choir Competitions,
Brass Band Contests and Musical Festivals.

The years between the wars saw a decline in chapel attendance. People were widening their interests. Skating Rinks, cinemas, the Variety Theatre were new interests.

Men had time to join societies and clubs, Floral, Pigeon, Bowling clubs, usually meeting in the local pub. There they could socialise, deal with club business and arrange their annual dinner or annual club outing.

Older women usually maintained links with the Sunday School and organised Fetes and Bazaars of 1 to 3 days duration, whilst the young girls would visit the cinema and walk up and down the "Monkey Run" in search of romance.</text>

<text>A typical Sunday Service at Roomfield Baptist Chapel in the early 1900s.

Older women usually maintained links with the Sunday School and organised Fêtes and Bazaars of 1 to 3 days duration, whilst the young girls would visit the cinema and walk up and down the "Monkey Run" in search of romance.</text>

<text>Alice Longstaff (née Speak) (d. 1992 aged 85) was a remarkable lady. Born at Little Lear Ings farm in Heptonstall on May 16 1907, she started work at 14 years old, in September 1921, as apprentice photographer at the Westerman Studio, 25 West End, Hebden Bridge. Crossley Westerman had established the studio in 1890; on his death in 1918 his daughter Ada took over the business, and it was Ada who trained the young apprentice. Alice remained there for the next 70 years. In 1935 she and her family bought the business, and her brother Clement became the framer and darkroom technician, until he died in 1963. In 1935 Alice married John Longstaff who joined the business as picture framer when Clement died, and they continued to work together until her death in 1992.

0ne of the most frequently-asked questions about the Longstaff Collection is why was it named after Alice, when so many of the photographs in the archive are credited to her predecessor Crossley Westerman?

Alice's Album - The Story of a Hebden Bridge Photographer's Studio, has the answer and much more! Copies are still available from local bookshops and online from Hebweb. This 68-page high quality soft-back lavishly illustrated with photographs in colour, sepia and black and white, it tells the story not only of Alice but of Crossley Westerman and his daughter, Ada, too, without whom there would be no collection.

Founder of the studio in the early 1890s, Crossley Westerman could have had little inkling of the amazing retailing tradition he had set in motion, ending only with the death, 100 years later, of Alice Longstaff who took over in 1935.

It's amazing enough for a business to survive for around a century but for it to be in the hands of only three proprietors makes for a fascinating story which "Alice's Album" tells from beginning to end.</text>
