BRIGHOUSE COLEY HALL LANE - CBC03824

Description

Archway to Coley Hall (formerly listed under Coley) 3.1.67 G.V. II*

Gateway, dated 1649. Broad moulded elliptical archway with moulded imposts, joggled voussoirs, and scrolled plinth surround by string in the form of a frame. This lifts over the keystone and returns to form 2 shallow spandrels. The keystone bears the date and a cross motif under a carved face, and the spandrels are carved with dogs and the traces of other animals. Over all is a raked cornice, with pierced tympanum and finials. L. Ambler, The Old Halls and Manor Houses of Yorkshire, (London 1913), p.33.
