It became a busy and important passenger interchange. However it lost much of its traffic in the 1950s and 60s and today it is unstaffed, the station buildings are all gone and the only service is the Hallam Line between Leeds, Castleford, Wakefield (Kirkgate), Barnsley and Sheffield.
