It has been a registered charity since 2003 to further its aims “of disseminating information about the Lancashire &amp; Yorkshire Railway using historical information to educate and inform the community at large about this part of our national heritage.” The Society holds a large collection of photographs and drawings and other information about the L&amp;YR in its archive for either historical research or railway modelling. The building on the Leeds Platform is only station building now remaining but minus the canopy. The siding and the track to the right have been lifted.

The first station was opened here in July 1839 by the Manchester &amp; Leeds Railway and was the terminus of the line from Manchester until the line was opened throughout in March 1841.</text>
