It has been a registered charity since 2003 to further its aims “of disseminating information about the Lancashire &amp; Yorkshire Railway using historical information to educate and inform the community at large about this part of our national heritage.” The Society holds a large collection of photographs and drawings and other information about the L&amp;YR in its archive for either historical research or railway modelling. At the time of its completion in December 1840 at 2885 yards (2663m) it was the longest railway tunnel in the world, but still well short of Standedge canal tunnel at 3.25 miles. As with most early tunnels there were casualties including several fatalities in its construction.</text>
