Now the government introduced help for authorities to start a housing programme. This ensured that old, obsolete, houses were demolished or renovated to higher standards, and grants were made to homeowners to improve their property.

The area between the Market Hall and Halifax Road was cleared of back-to-back houses, similarly houses in the Burnley Road area at Cobden were demolished, and areas at Shade and Lobmill were cleared.

<text>The Making of Todmorden’ was an exhibition staged in June 1993 at Todmorden Town Hall. Initiated by Jack Taylor MBE and Todmorden Information Centre Trust it used material researched and compiled by Jack Taylor, Betty Savage, Derek Proctor, Dennis O'Neill and members of the Todmorden Antiquarian Society. We are also indebted to the Fielden family and Roger Birch, who provided many of the images. Roger also did much of the work in putting the exhibition together. Opened by Nobel prizewinner Sir Geoffrey Wilkinson, the exhibition received great acclaim. It tells the story of Todmorden’s rich industrial heritage and its people and the success of the exhibition was in no small part due to the detailed research undertaken. It is a fine body of work and is presented here as a tribute to all those who contributed to the exhibition. <text>As a result of the mill closures, some families left the area, causing a drop in population. House building schemes had been left in abeyance during the war. Now the government introduced help for authorities to start a housing programme. This ensured that old, obsolete, houses were demolished or renovated to higher standards, and grants were made to homeowners to improve their property.

The area between the Market Hall and Halifax Road Todmorden was cleared of back-to-back houses, similarly houses in the Burnley Road area at Cobden were demolished, and areas at Shade and Lobmill were cleared.

<text><strong>Derailment 1942</strong> - On the Friday night of September 4th 1942, a goods train left the rails at Todmorden viaduct and crashed down the embankment behind the market ground. With 28 coal wagons in tow, the train was heading towards Littleborough at 10pm when it was diverted into a loop line to allow another train to pass. In the loop line, it overshot the buffers and plunged down the embankment, demolishing a telegraph pole. The driver was pinned between the engine and the tender for some 2 1/2 hours while a rescue party fought to dig him out from under two tons of coal. The photograph shows the engine being craned back on to the line on Sunday. By 3.30 pm it was back on the rails ready to be taken away on its own wheels.</text>

Built around 1800 and adjoining the Laneside cottages, the four-storey building was the first of many extensions and additions that would become Waterside Mills. The building, however, had been little used during the previous ten years - spinning operations had been concentrated at Robinwood and Lumbutts. The fire started in the single-storey building next to Rochdale Road, at that time occupied by James Henry Sutcliffe, a cabinet maker. 'Jim Harry', as he was known, later built a new factory at Harehill for the production of bedroom and dining room furniture.</text>

<text><strong>First Motor Fire Engine</strong> - Local officials and visitors from neighbouring towns met at the Fire Station on 30th October 1914 to witness the arrival of the new motor fire engine, delivered by Merryweather &amp; Co. of London. Shortly after 2 o'clock, they followed the new fire engine in a special bus to Hare Mill where the powerful 'Hatfield' pump was put through a number of tests. In the first test, using two 75 ft. lengths of hose and a pressure of 180 lbs., the jet reached just below the word 'Hare' on the chimney, a height of 105 ft. All the tests proved successful. Afterwards, the engine, driven by one of Merryweather's men, made a trial run to Portsmouth, then to Callis Bridge and on to Walsden for a deep lift from the canal at Hollins Bridge. In its vermilion-painted livery, the new engine was fitted with a 4-cylinder petrol-driven motor capable of delivering 60-70 hp and speeds of up to 40mph. Pictured outside the engine-house at Hare Mill are the Mayor of Todmorden, Alderman Robert Jackson (on the right), Councillor Fred Pickes, Chairman of the Watch Committee, and the Merryweather's representative. In the 19th Century, Todmorden was expanding rapidly and the need for a fire fighting force was obvious. Certain local firms had their own brigades, who could be and were, used in the town. In 1884 a petition to the Local Board requested the purchase of a steam fire engine and manned by a brigade. In 1885 the engine was purchased and a brigade appointed. In 1900 the brigade moved to Waterside Mill. A motor fire engine was purchased in 1914. <br /><br />In 1941 the service was taken over by the state, denationalised in 1948, and put under the control of the West Yorkshire Fire Service.</text>

The co-operative movement in Todmorden started in the early 19th Century and expanded rapidly for the next 100 years. From one small store, the movement grew until there were general stores in every part of the area. The main store was in Dale Street and here furniture, carpets, millinery, drapers, gents' clothing and coal could be obtained.

The 'Co-op' movement concerned itself with educational matters so when the town received it s charter in July 1896, they presented the town with their library of 8,000 books, and also presented the present library building to the town.

Recent years have seen many amalgamations with other companies, and unfortunately, our local Co-op has suffered. The days of co-op checks and divi are no more.</text>
