<text>The Making of Todmorden’ was an exhibition staged in June 1993 at Todmorden Town Hall. Initiated by Jack Taylor MBE and Todmorden Information Centre Trust it used material researched and compiled by Jack Taylor, Betty Savage, Derek Proctor, Dennis O'Neill and members of the Todmorden Antiquarian Society. We are also indebted to the Fielden family and Roger Birch, who provided many of the images. Roger also did much of the work in putting the exhibition together. Opened by Nobel prizewinner Sir Geoffrey Wilkinson, the exhibition received great acclaim. It tells the story of Todmorden’s rich industrial heritage and its people and the success of the exhibition was in no small part due to the detailed research undertaken. It is a fine body of work and is presented here as a tribute to all those who contributed to the exhibition.
With the use of water power, the output of cloth increased. This increase in trade saw the opening up of the valleys and the construnction of Turn Pike Roads, with their toll bars, which made journey times shorter. The toll board at Steanor Bottom is evidence of the type and variety of vehicle using the roads, circa 1769.

The opening of the Rochdale - Sowerby Bridge Canal (1798-1802) for the conveyance of goods, virtually eliminated the use of the packhorse roads, except for local use. Even the Turn Pike Trust experienced a drop in revenue. Goods could be transported in greater quantities, and more quickly by canal barge than by road. Hardly had the canal revealed its advantages over road transport, than the railway appeared. In this area one of the greatest engineering feats of the 19th Century can be seen in the Summit Tunnel. In its day, 1841, it was the longest tunnel in Europe. The Tait prints provide an excellent record of the building of the line from Manchester to Normanton.</text>

With the use of water power, the output of cloth increased. This increase in trade saw the opening up of the valleys and the construction of Turn Pike Roads, with their toll bars, which made journey times shorter.

<text>Three hundred years ago, most of the population would be found in the farms and cottages on the upland "shelf", in areas such as Shore, Mankinholes and Bottomley. Families were self-sufficient, growing and producing most of their own food and clothing.

Gradually, the merchant clothiers, the entrepreneurs of the 17th - 18th century emerged. The domestic system with its "putting-out" system became the norm. Hand loom weavers working at home would take their woven pieces to the clothier at the "takkin' in shop". In return he would furnish them with more wool to be taken home and spun and woven. The clothier would visit the cloth or piece hall to sell the woven pieces and to buy wool.

A view of Ratcher and Hough Stones, above Holebottom.

The three-storey Ratcher cottage on the right is a typical example of the building constructed specifically for a cottage industry. It was later used as a bobbin factory for Lawrence Wilson from 1823.

Peter Hunt has provided the following information: I lived here at Hough Stones from birth in 1953 until the family sold it in 1978. In 1953 it was 2 dwellings until about 1960 when my parents bought the cottage and turned it into a single dwelling. It had no mains services in 1953. A private water supply.

The picture was taken at Hartley Royd Farm c1919, and shows John William Greenwood and his grandchildren Jim and Annie Stansfield. The father of the children was Frank Stansfield who had married John William Greenwood's daughter Sarah in 1905. The couple were from Cornholme. Sarah died in confinement at her sister's in Cornholme in 1909 and Frank later married Mary Ann Collinge in 1910.</text>
