The Old Church of St Thomas A Beckett (now preserved as a Monument) The first registered date for this property was 1590. However, records suggest that it was constructed in the mid 13th Century around 1260. The west side of the tower was badly damaged by storm in 1847, resulting in a new church being constructed which was consecrated in 1854. David Hartley, one of the famous Coiners was buried here in 1770, whose grave is approximately 15 metres away in the direction of the new porch.</text>

<text>During the course of the 18th century Halifax came to occupy a prominent place in West Yorkshire as a cloth market, and the Piece Hall, opened in 1779, is a striking monument to the pre-factory age. ‘Pieces’ or lengths of cloth, handwoven in Pennine houses, were brought to market each Saturday morning by local manufacturers and smaller cloth makers, to be sold not only to local merchants and to buyers from across the country, but also to agents acting on behalf of Continental merchants.

The building itself, probably designed by John Hope of Liverpool, is an open rectangular structure containing originally 315 rooms, surrounding a courtyard of some 10,000 square yards and comprising a two-storey colonnade with a lower storey added on the eastern side to take account of the sloping site. The architecture draws on Roman classical precedents, with rustic piers supporting semi-circular arches on the ground floor ‘Arcade’ level, square jointed columns on the intermediate ‘Rustic’ level, and a series of round Doric columns on the top floor ‘Colonnade’.

The mechanisation of the textile industry in the first hall of the 19th century progressively undermined the position of the handloom weaver in the local economy, and the centralisation of all textile processes within large mill buildings, to which merchants had direct access, rendered the Piece Hall increasingly obsolete. During its decline it was used for a variety of public events, including political meetings, firework displays, a balloon ascent, and Whit Monday Sunday School ‘Sings’. It was finally handed over to Halifax Corporation in 1868, and for over a century served as a wholesale fish, fruit and vegetable market. Although scheduled as an Ancient Monument in 1928, its historic and architectural significance was not widely appreciated until the 1970s, when it was cleaned and restored. It now houses a wide variety of shops, and a restaurant, art gallery, tourist information centre and pre-industrial museum.

<text>Mr Lloyd Greenwood (d. 2005 aged 80) was affectionately known as "Mr Hebden Bridge” on account of his knowledge of the area, its history, its people and events. Born in Hebden Bridge he attended Stubbings School and the former Central Street Middle School. A railway worker for 44 years he was called up in 1943 and was involved with hospital trains and troop movements. He was later shipped off to Burma to help restore the shattered transport system. He was well known for his talks and slide shows to local organisations throughout Calderdale. He was a trustee of the Alice Longstaff Gallery Collection and together with Frank Woolrych, helped stage many popular exhibitions of photographs in the Hebden Bridge Tourist Information Office.</text>

<text>A number of myths have accumulated over the years around this unusual landmark which is often referred to as ‘Wainhouse’s Folly’ or the 'Tower of Spite'. The truth is simply that the octagonal tower was erected as a chimney for the Washer Lane Dye Works. The hillside rises steeply so in order to disperse the smoke effectively it was built on top of the escarpment and particularly high, with a long flue connecting it to the mill 200 yards below. John Edward Wainhouse considered that so prominent a chimney should be in the best taste and commissioned Isaac Booth to prepare plans. He designed it as an octagonal stone tower containing a circular brick flue with steps climbing between. But Booth also acted as architect for Sir Henry Edwards, of the neighbouring Pye Nest estate, whose relations with Wainhouse had been strained for some time; finding his situation impossible, Booth withdrew from the project. In 1874 Wainhouse sold the Washer Lane Works and the new owner refused to be saddled with an unfinished chimney. Wainhouse then chose Richard Swarbrick Dugdale, a former pupil of Booth, to complete the tower that was no longer needed for its intended purpose. The new designs incorporated a lower balcony, corbelled and balustraded, with a peristyle of sixteen 20-foot columns supporting an upper balustraded balcony, surmounted by a lantern, dome and finial. The tower is 253 feet high from the entrance threshold to the top of the finial and 403 steps lead to the top balcony. The overall cost of building is estimated to have been £14,000.
