His son Thomas succeeded him, and a daughter Elizabeth, married Thomas Fairfax of Walton. Gilling continued in the family of Fairfax until the death of the ninth viscount in 1772, then his daughter and after her, a cousin, Mr Pigott came into possession, the latter taking the name of Fairfax. In the next generation the male line again failed, and Gilling passed in 1885 to Captain Cholmley. In a military sense it was never used for a depot or a garrison, but rather a fortified outpost. The Lordship of Gilling was held of old by the great house of Mowbray, and the castle was one of their feudal strong holds. Farnley contains an almost unique collection of old oak chests and a most interesting gathering it is, from the iron bound chests with mighty hinges and locks to the delicately carved and beautifully modeled specimens of later periods. There is a secret entrance to this chamber from which an outlook was obtained in troublous times. After the Battle of Bannockburn, the Scots over ran the North of England and Craven, rich in cattle, received frequent visits. Farnhill Hall is a castellated fortified house, possessing four towers, and was built for the purposes of defence. There is no date on it, but it must have been built at a time when the marauding Scots roamed the Dale with impunity. The walls vary in thickness from four to eight feet thick, and the towers are solid, with parapets at the top, high enough to screen a watchman from observation. Title A name given to the resource Esholt Hall - the South Front - HLS05786 Subject The topic of the resource Architecture, Buildings, Hall Description An account of the resource Slide 1: Esholt Hall, like several other houses of its class in Yorkshire, occupies the site on which stood an ancient monastic establishment. The situation of Esholt lies snugly amid leafy surroundings, and is well sheltered from the north by a wooded eminence. In olden times what a secluded retreat this must have been for the small company of Cistercian nuns who had their habitation here in the middle of the 12th century to the middle of the 16th century! This nunnery was dedicated to God, Saint Mary and St Leonard. Nothing remains of the structure now, for when Sir Walter Calverly built the present Hall in the early part of the 18th century it is generally thought to have been removed then, and some of the material used in the erection of the Hall which occupies its site. Title A name given to the resource East Riddlesden Hall - HLS05783 Subject The topic of the resource Architecture, Buildings, Hall, Mullion Window, Rose window Description An account of the resource Slide 3 - The west front consists of two gables of three storeys and mullioned and transomed windows in groups of threes, and are exceedingly picturesque. At the north end of this front is a porch with semi-circular arched doorway and a fine wheel window over. Here for two Centuries was the home of the Paslaw family, but most of the present edifice was erected at a subsequent period. It continued to be held by them until the end of Elizabeth's reign, when John Rushworth who married a sister of Francis, the last Paslaw, the property passed into the hands of James Murgatroyd, a wealthy neighbour, in the period of the Commonwealth, Rushworth reserving one room to live in and sufficient produce for his maintenance. The Murgatroyds became so reduced in circumstances that in about fifty years they disposed of it to the Starkeys, to whose descendants until recently it belonged.
