<text>This photograph was taken in the closing years of the 19th century or the beginning of the 20th. The Rochdale Canal running from the bottom left to the top right makes a useful guide to the town as it was then. The road over the narrow bridge at the bottom has come up from Hebble End bridge and after crossing the canal forks left to Fairfield and right to Horsehold. The small building nestling under the bridge wall was the workshop of a plumber usually called Billy Putty and the larger building was the Neptune Inn where the first meeting to consider a canal was held, and where the Inquiry which resulted in the formation of Hebden Bridge as a single unit was held in 1866.
The large mill was Melbourne Mill, now the site of the supermarket, and Brunswick Mill is behind it. Beyond that is the new Central School with its new stonework showing up against the darker mill buildings. A second storey has been added to the school in 1895 which helps to date the picture, as does the open field next to it which became the site of the Grammar School (now Riverside) in 1908. In the background, the arches help to identify Stubbings School (opened 1878) and the frontage of Hope Chapel is quite clear, again looking on to open fields. From a glass slide.

The following text is taken from Looking Back at Hebden Bridge by Frank Horsfall & Terry Wyke

The first church established by the Particular Baptists in Hebden Bridge was Ebenezer Chapel which was opened in 1777 due to the efforts of Rev. John Fawcett. Fawcett, who had previously been minister of the Wainsgate Chapel, was a leading figure in the Baptists movement and despite offers of more eminent posts he remained at Ebenezer until his death in 1817. His work at Brearley Hall and later at Ewood Hall to train men for the Baptist ministry led to the establishment of the Northern Baptist Education Society. John Foster, the essayist, was one of his best-remembered pupils. After his death the congregation at Ebenezer continued to grow and it was decided to erect a new chapel.

Hope Chapel was opened in 1858 and the photograph shows Hope at around that time. However, the old chapel was not immediately closed down, it continued to be used as a Sunday School, and later as Hebden Hall it was a popular venue for public meetings. In the late 1880s it was occupied by the publishers, Kershaw and Ashworth, and for many years the Hebden Bridge Times was printed from these premises. In more recent times, this part of Market Street has been widened and the chapel graveyard has been tidied up, although sufficient stones remain to remind visitors to the antique shops, which now occupy the chapel, of the ancestry of one of Hebden Bridge’s historically important buildings.</text>

<text>This Grade II listed chapel is situated off Northgate, Heptonstall, and is one of the earliest Wesleyan chapels in the country. John Wesley laid the foundation stone for the unusual octagonal building which was completed in 1764, since when it has been in continuous use.

In 1795, it was decided that a Sunday School should be opened, as it was the only form of education that the poorer children could get. Even then, it would only be a basic schooling in reading and writing, but better than nothing.

The Chapel was originally built as a symmetrical octagon, but by 1802 there were 337 members and 1,002 scholars. To provide extra space, one end was pulled down and the side walls were extended. The extra space created by this enlargement enabled a new raised pulpit and a singing pew to be installed.

The present day Sunday School is just below the chapel and wasn't built until 1891.</text>

The Society organises a winter programme from September to March on Wednesdays at the Methodist Church in Hebden Bridge at 7:30 pm.

The Society's archive and library is housed at The Birchcliffe Centre, Hebden Bridge. The collection is available for members to use on the second Wednesday and fourth Saturday of each month.

Donations to the archive are welcomed. Contributions of photos and documents, even from the recent past.

A catalogue of the Society's is available on their website..

One of the many projects the Society is currently working on is the Gibson and Sutcliffe papers. The materials had been lying in a room at Croft House in Hebden Bridge, undisturbed for over 50 years. One collection belonged to Abraham Gibson of Greenwood Lee and the other to Sutcliffe & Sutcliffe, architects.

Members of the Society are also transcribing gravestones in Heptonstall churchyard, providing easy access to local information for genealogists.</text>
