There are singular uncanny legends of this lady at Old Hall, which she is said to have haunted, until such timeas she was cnjured into a certain deep place in the river Calder, called henceforth 'Lady Bolle's Pit'. Thus it appears the country folk 'laid' the ghost by drowning it!

The Hall and estate then descended to Sir William Jopson, and after his death passed to the Dalstons, who held the property for three generations. It afterwards passed to the Fanquire's one of whom sold the Hall and lands to John Smythe of Heath, to whose descendants it still belongs.</text>

It appears to have been built by John Kaye of Dalton, who was the son of another John Kaye, by the daughter and heiress of William Dodsworth of Shelley. John Kaye's name appears on visitation of Yorkshire in 1564, which may serve to indicate the date of its erection.

The arms of John Kaye, quartering those of his mother, are above the principal entrance, which is approached by a noble flight of sixteen steps. From the Kayes the Hall passed to the Withams of Ledston.</text>

The Society organises a winter programme from September to March on Wednesdays at the Methodist Church in Hebden Bridge at 7:30 pm.

The Society's archive and library is housed at The Birchcliffe Centre, Hebden Bridge. The collection is available for members to use on the second Wednesday and fourth Saturday of each month.

Donations to the archive are welcomed. Contributions of photos and documents, even from the recent past.

A catalogue of the Society's is available on their website..

One of the many projects the Society is currently working on is the Gibson and Sutcliffe papers. The materials had been lying in a room at Croft House in Hebden Bridge, undisturbed for over 50 years. One collection belonged to Abraham Gibson of Greenwood Lee and the other to Sutcliffe & Sutcliffe, architects.

Members of the Society are also transcribing gravestones in Heptonstall churchyard, providing easy access to local information for genealogists.</text>
