The arch was erected as part of the celebrations marking the Coronation of King George V and Queen Mary in 1911. On this side it was lit by electricity and on the other side by gas. Holme House is the building at the other side of the arch.

There had been an inn on this site since 1851. The White Horse Hotel closed its doors 1960 and was demolished in 1962, the site is now a car park.
