<text>NAME: HOLMBRIDGE MILL

LOCATION: Holmbridge

REF: HU 3

GRID REF: 121 067

CLASSIFICATION: B and D

CONDITION: Semi used

APPROX DATE OF SITE AND BUILDINGS: Early–mid 19C/early 20C

DESCRIPTION/HISTORY: A good example of an early to mid 19C mill building here, and now the only surviving one in the Holmbridge district. A three storey (plus attic) stone building with a circular staircase tower and mill pond and race immediately behind. Some later additions at the front – now partly derelict. Across the road there is a small weaving shed, a large two and three storey stone building (date stone 1936) and offices etc. Other parts demolished. This part of the site was probably separately owned at some time and appears to have been called Clarence Mill. Going back much earlier though, there was a fulling mill in this vicinity and woollen manufacture was recorded here in 1800.

PRESENT USE AND POTENTIAL: Only the ground floor of the old mill seems to be used - by a joiner. The weaving shed/later buildings across the road are partly used by a textile company and as a craft workshop. Space to let when visited. The older building could be considered for listing – it remains mostly unaltered and is in danger of deterioration.

                <text>NAME: BANKS MILL
LOCATION: Midgelden Clough
REF: CD17
GRID REF: 903 237
CLASSIFICATION: A
CONDITION: Ruins
APPROX DATE OF SITE AND BUILDINGS: Late 18C/early 19C
DESCRIPTION/HISTORY: Situated in the upper part of Midgelden Clough, this was the highest mill site in the Todmorden area (over 900ft up). The mill was built over the stream and the ruins of walls and archways can be seen, as well as the outline of a goit. It had probably fallen into disuse by the beginning of this century. May also have been known as Asia Mill.
PRESENT USE AND POTENTIAL: Much of the clough just upstream has been used for tipping, and could benefit from a clean-up. The mill ruins can be seen from the main road (A681).

LOCATION: Halifax Road, Ripponden
REF: RY 21
GRID REF: 043 203
CLASSIFICATION: D
CONDITION: Semi used
APPROX DATE OF SITE AND BUILDINGS: Mid to late 19C
DESCRIPTION/HISTORY: This is a large six storey, stone built mill with an adjoining engine house (now converted to an office) and a circular stone chimney. It was built by the Ripponden and District Spinning Company in the early 1860s, but due to financial problems it did not come into use until several years later. A number of modern, low-level sheds have been built around the site. Also known as Ripponden Wood Mill.
PRESENT USE AND POTENTIAL: The site is used by a firm of laundry equipment suppliers, although the mill building itself seems to be only partly used. The chimney is still in use.

<text>In about 1830 a series of four dams was constructed above the Fieldens’ Lumbutts Mill to feed a new water-wheel tower. This striking industrial monument housed three wheels, one vertically above the other, in an ingenious piece of engineering that has been attributed to William Fairbairn. Each of the overshot wheels was 30 feet in diameter and 6 feet wide. The water from the top dam fell a distance of 90 feet inside the tower and was joined by additional water from the other dams to generate in excess of 53 horse power when using the full supply of 18 tons of water per minute. Adjoining the 98-foot-high tower is a chimney housing a spiral staircase.

                <text>NAME: FORD MILL
LOCATION: Near Totties, Holmfirth
REF: HU 36
GRID REF: 155 095
CLASSIFICATION: D
CONDITION: Semi used
APPROX DATE OF SITE AND BUILDINGS: Late 19C/20C
DESCRIPTION/HISTORY: A large mill site to be found, unusually, on an upland plateau between the Holme and Jackson Bridge Dike valleys. The mill was built c1862 for woollen yarn spinning and some stone built parts may survive from this date, as well as the square stone chimney slightly above the main site. There is a whole collection of later extensions and additions – mainly one and two storey stone built, plus a part demolished three storey brick building. Woollen spinning continued here until the 1950’s.
PRESENT USE AND POTENTIAL: Some of the site appears to have been subdivided and is occupied by a few small concerns. However, there was very little activity when visited. The size of the site and its inaccessible location makes its future somewhat uncertain, and further demolition may occur.

In 1830, the three Ingham brothers bought a plot of land in the Castle Street area. Trading as Richard Ingham & Sons, they built Woodhouse Mill as a steam powered cotton-spinning mill in 1832. It faced onto the canal, with a tier of doors designed to take in goods directly from the boats. These doors were situated in the middle of the front wall. The hoist above these doors was attached to a small triangular pediment, which is inscribed 1832.

The engine house and boiler house, together with the warehouse, were detached from the main building, as is the chimney. The mill was 5 storeys high, ten bays long by four bays deep. There was no weaving shed at Woodhouse, so initially all the weaving was put out to local handloom weavers. When its sister mill, Cinderhill, had a weaving shed added, the two mills ran in conjunction and home weaving was discontinued. In the 1850's they added an extension to the side of the mill, 4 storeys high with a flat roof that carried a cast iron reservoir.

The manager of the mill in 1880 was Elias Barker. He entered into a formal partnership with James Greenwood, an engineer from Halifax, and trading as Barker & Greenwood they took out a lease on both Cinderhill and Woodhouse Mills. The partnership was dissolved in 1884, from which time Elias Barker continued alone. He was last mentioned as a tenant in 1897 when his place was taken by Wilson Greenwood. It seems the mill was later purchased by Wilson Greenwood, possibly after the death of John Arthur Ingham in 1900.

Mr. Greenwood was still running the mill in 1930. It then closed and was left derelict for many years. The mill was made a Grade II Listed Building and became a possible candidate for restoration and conversion to a textile and industrial museum.

However, in 1994 an accidental fire gutted the interior and left it without a roof and end wall. This put paid to any conversion, but more recently a businessman purchased it and has restored it faithfully to its former glory on the outside of the building, whilst converting the interior into residential apartments.

LOCATION: New Mill

REF: HV 35

GRID REF: 163 087

CLASSIFICATION: C

CONDITION: Mostly used

APPROX DATE OF SITE AND BUILDINGS: Mid – late 19C (site earlier)

DESCRIPTION/HISTORY: This was the site of the manorial corn mill, which moved here from Holmfirth in the early 14C. Fulling was also carried out and in 1780 a scribbling engine was installed – one of the earliest in the Holme Valley area. Part of the old mill apparently still survives and houses the works canteen. Also the old mill race can be clearly seen running across the fields. Site known at this time as Ing Nook Mill. Present main mill building dates from the mid 19C – four storey, stone built in the typical style of that period. Number of smaller outbuildings of similar or later date, weaving shed and modern buildings on the site. The square stone chimney is set above the mill.

PRESENT USE AND POTENTIAL: The mill is still used for textiles manufacture, producing worsted cloth. The site is of historical interest.

                <text>NAME: LUMB MILL
LOCATION: Lumb, Ryburn Valley
REF: RY 27
GRID REF: 031 215
CLASSIFICATION: B
CONDITION: Fully used
APPROX DATE OF SITE AND BUILDINGS: Early 19C onwards
DESCRIPTION/HISTORY: It is hard to envisage this site as a mill from its external appearance, a group of adjoining two storey ‘domestic type’ buildings. The earliest part is at the eastern end, with the rest built and altered at later dates (date stone 1888 on one part). The dam is raised up behind, and remains full of water. Cotton spinning was recorded here C1805, and continued through the 19C. Was probably converted/rebuilt to cottages some time ago.
PRESENT USE AND POTENTIAL: As mentioned, the buildings here have been divided into a number of residential dwellings, with some modern alterations.
