This is near Slack Bottom and was farmed by Longbottom's. Eileen Longbottom is one of the smaller children inside the cart. Some of the other children were evacuees brought to the area from London and other southern towns. They often stayed with farming families and many attended Colden School as well as Heptonstall School. The cart is somewhat "homemade". It was common to use the rear axle from a motor vehicle which usually had rubber tyred wheels (farm carts had wooden wheels with iron rims). This cart would double as a "muck" cart as well as haycart. To achieve the biggest load the cart sides have been extended outwards and a frame has been added to the rear. Once loaded with hay, the rope would be cast over the load and secured at the opposite rear corner of the cart. The harness is typical apart from the rope in place of a "belly band". At the time of the 1901 census he was employing two farm servants who could be the men pictured. The man at the rear of the cart is about to run milk from the kit/churn into a smaller can; milk would be measured into the customer's jug using the measuring vessel in his right hand. The engine, driven by John Leech had left the rails and fallen on its side whilst traversing the gantry at the middle bank of the reservoirs. The couple on the engine, possibly intending to have a picnic judging by the hamper, are not identified but third from left is possibly George Thomas Smith. The exact location is not known. Postcard. Title A name given to the resource Dawson City, Heptonstall - EIL00121 Subject The topic of the resource Children, Dawson City, Heptonstall, Places Description An account of the resource Named after the town of Dawson City in The Yukon in Canada which experienced the Klondike Gold Rush towards the end of the 19th century, this place, above Whitehill Nook, Heptonstall, was well established by the time of the 1901 census. There were about 10 huts occupied by families and their boarders, and about 12 huts unoccupied or in the process of building. Most residents were navvies or engine drivers. By the 1911 census there were only two resident families: William Seagrave Langford (family and boarders) and Thomas Stanger Boon, an engine driver, with his wife Mary Elizabeth. During the building of the Walshaw Dean reservoirs many navvies and other workers were housed in local farm buildings and cottages which had fallen out of use. Postcard.
