It was one of the first mills of the Industrial Revolution. The mill was driven by a water wheel and produced cotton cloth up until 1890. In 1833, twenty-one workers were employed, each working around seventy-two hours per week and living in the adjacent mill workers’ cottages. In the early 1900s, Gibson Mill began to be used as an ‘entertainment emporium’ for the local people. It offered dining saloons, a dance hall, a roller-skating rink, refreshment kiosks and boating on the millpond. The Chapel was extended a few years later by the addition of a Sunday School, which for many years was the only form of education available to village children.The building has undergone several renovations, and today provides a place for the church to meet and worship, and also a suite of rooms which the community can use. The building is being gradually renovated, as funding permits, to improve the quality of the facilities available. We have recently refitted the upstairs hall and installed a stairlift, and renovated the ground floor rooms to make them energy efficient. Although not unique, there is another instance at Alvingham in Lincolnshire, this is unusual. At the centre of the village are the ruins of the Church of St Thomas à Becket built between 1256 and 1260. Later adaptations gave the Church two naves, two aisles and two chantry chapels as well as a tower. John Wesley, who preached there on more than one occasion, is reputed to have said that it was the ugliest church he knew. Following a great storm in 1847 the west face of the tower fell away. Some measure of repair took place and the church remained in use up to 1854 when the present church, St Thomas the Apostle, was completed at a cost of £7,000. The ruins of St Thomas à Becket are maintained and are open to the public. Open air services are occasionally conducted there. The first floor at one time housed a large reception room, popular for dancing. Later it became the Carlton Hotel but now the the top two floors have been converted into apartments. From the Hebden Bridge Times & Calder Vale Gazette, June 1890 Co-operative Hall Opened The Co-operative Hall and an extension of the central premises of the Hebden Bridge Co-operative Society Ltd., were opened and the public clock in the tower of the premises which formed part of the new buildings was started. Mr. James Sutcliffe (the Society’s manager) opened the new grocery department; Mr E.V. Neale, general secretary of the Co-operative Union, opened the Co-operative Hall; and Mr. Abraham Webster, the Society’s secretary, stared the clock. Silver keys were presented to those performing the opening ceremonies. The new extensions opened were the present grocery department, boot and shoe department, the offices, warehouse and store-rooms. The contractors for the various works were as follows: Mason, Mr. Jonas Kershaw; joinery, Mr. James Lister; slating and plastering, Messrs. T. Wrigley and Son; plumbing and glazing, Mr. Abm. Uttley; painting and polishing, Mr. Heap Uttley - all of Hebden Bridge; wood block paving, Mr. L. Lowe, Bolton; clock, Messrs. J. Smith and Sons, Derby; ironwork, Mr. John Stansfield, Todmorden. Mr George Stansfield, president, presided over the proceedings throughout the day. The afternoon ceremonies were followed by a tea and soiree which were attended by nearly 900 people. The speakers were Mr. J.T.W. Mitchell, chairman of the Wholesale society; Mr. James Fairclough, of Barnsley; and Mr. Thomas Swann, secretary of the Wholesale society. Built in 1887, sadly dry rot caused the chapel to be closed in August 1960 and it was demolished in 1970 and flats now occupy the site. After closure the society joined with the Wesleyan chapel on Scout Road and became Mytholmroyd Methodist Church. A memorial plaque to those who died in the two Great Wars was removed from the Primitive Chapel and placed in the Scout Road chapel. In turn in 2014 the Scout Road chapel closed and the congregation joined with Hebden Bridge Methodist Church to become Hebden Royd Methodist Church.
