<text>Central Board School was the second Board School in Hebden Bridge. (Stubbings, 1878 was the first), and was opened in July 1884 as the Todmorden United District Hebden Bridge Central Board School. Originally it was a one—storey building and the second storey was added and opened in 1895 and the ornate frontage would be part of this additional building.
In the early 1980s the building was declared unsafe and it was demolished in 1983 to be replaced by a new building, Central Infants School which opened in March 1984.

The first Board School in Hebden Bridge was the school now called Stubbings which opened in 1878. It proved very popular and was soon overcrowded. A plot of land between Market Street and the river was bought for £12,000. The new single storey Central Board School opened in July 1884. A second storey was added in 1895 incorporating a cookery room and a chemistry laboratory. With more room available the school was split into an Infant Department and a Mixed Department (with a leaving age of 13 years). Some of the Stubbing's children were transferred to the Central School and a return of 1897 showed 552 children in the Mixed Department and 143 in the Infants. In the 1980s doubts were expressed about the safety of the building and it was demolished in 1983 to be replaced by a new building. The original Central School gave its name to the Street. The new school, Central Street Infant School, has been named after the street.</text>

<text>The buildings in the foreground are Regent Street / Sackville Street / Cleveland Place / Oak Street as they were initially developed. The deeds to 2 Regent Street and 6 Sackville Street indicate the properties were built in the1890's. The houses 2 Regent Street and 2,4,6,8,10 Sackville Street were all built at the same time with the raised portion above number 8 & 10 Sackville Street being a workshop, presumably a sewing shop. Today the centre window shown in the raised portion is blocked off and the upper floor has been split between the 8 & 10 Sackville Street. A blocked up doorway at the gable end of 10 Sackville Street indicates that an outside staircase was used by the workers to access the top floor. Information courtesy of Paul Murphy.

Nutclough Mill, an early co-operative manufacturer is central to the picture. The various stages of development can clearly be seen, the oldest part is the darker section in the middle, it was later extended on either side and upwards. The old Birchcliffe Chapel is top right, and the row of houses in the bottom right-hand corner is Regent Street with Oak Street, Sackville Street, Cleveland Place and Hangingroyd Lane running at right-angles to it.</text>

<text>Crossley Westerman was born in Hebden Bridge in 1861, the youngest of the three children of Henry and Sarah Westerman. Crossley’s father died in 1873 and his mother was left to bring up the family on her own. She opened a toyshop at West End, Hebden Bridge. Crossley probably started work in a local mill soon after his father died, and he trained as a fustian cutter.

In 1882 Crossley married Mary Cockcroft, and the couple had five children. Following the death of his mother in 1892 Crossley and his family returned to West End and the toyshop was transformed into a photographer’s studio and created a business, which was to run for 100 years. It was one of the first studios in the area to use electric light.

Crossley died of a heart attack in 1918 and his eldest daughter, Ada, took over running the business, in 1921 taking on an apprentice, Alice Speak, who later became Alice Longstaff.</text>
