"Wilson's Bobbin Mill once dominated the village of Cornholme. The vast four-storey building, with its eye-catching clock bridge spanning Burnley Road, was erected in 1880 following a fire which gutted the original premises. The mill exported bobbins, charcoal and firelighters all over the world, to places as far away as India and Japan. Disaster struck in 1888 when a massive fire tore through the premises, causing damage estimated at £20,000 and throwing over 400 people out of work. The factory was re-built and by 1891 the workforce had increased to 500. Business was so good a base was established at Garston, near Liverpool, but this expansion was to prove the death knell for Cornholme. The new branch quickly outstripped the Yorkshire mill and by 1902 had become the headquarters of the company. Less than 30 years later the Cornholme works was closed down altogether." Wagons on a heavy goods train broke loose coming down from Copy Pit to Portsmouth and the train divided into two parts. When the engines stopped at Stansfield Hall signals the detached wagons speeding down the incline crashed into them. As well as the wagons the station platform and a stone pier on the footbridge were damaged. Several wagons crashed down the embankment into the garden of a house below. Reputedly it had the tallest chimney in the valley. The bridge over the canal was a very early skew bridge and also one of the very first 'bow-string' bridges to be built, but it was replaced in 1939 by the metal trough bridge we see today. The valley is so narrow at this point that to accommodate road, canal and railway, the river had to be culverted under the road. Title A name given to the resource Stoodley Pike, Todmorden - RDA00139 Subject The topic of the resource Building, Monument, Places, Stoodley Pike, Todmorden Description An account of the resource Stoodley Pike refers to a 1400 feet (400m) hill, although it is better known for its 121feet (37m) monument which was designed by local architect James Green and completed in 1856 at the end of the Crimean War. The monument replaced an earlier structure completed in 1815 to commemorate the defeat of Napoleon. It collapsed in 1854 after a lightning strike, as a result of which a lightning conductor was added which has proved to be successful. It was paid for by public subscription, the shortfall being covered by the Fielden family. It is believed that the inscription below was cut by Mr Luke Fielden and that Mr John Fielden himself wrote the words. The weathered inscription reads: STOODLEY PIKE. A PEACE MONUMENT ERECTED BY PUBLIC SUBSCRIPTION. COMMENCED IN 1814 TO COMMEMORATE THE SURRENDER OF PARIS TO THE ALLIES AND FINISHED AFTER THE BATTLE OF WATERLOO WHEN PEACE WAS ESTABLISHED IN 1815. BY A STRANGE COINCIDENCE THE PIKE FELL ON THE DAY THE RUSSIAN AMBASSADOR LEFT LONDON BEFORE THE DECLARATION OF WAR WITH RUSSIA IN 1854. IT WAS REBUILT WHEN PEACE WAS RESTORED IN 1856.
