<text>Grade II

House. Late C15 timber-framed interior encased in stone probably mid C18. Hammer-dressed stone (rendered), stone slate roof. Hall and cross-wings plan, the left hand of which projects and has gable. Right hand under same roof as hall, except to rear where two gables flank single storey aisle under cat slide roof. South front has mid C18 details of three bays two storeys. First bay has three-light flat faced mullioned window with columbarium over. Hall range of two bays each having doorways with monolithic jambs and flat faced mullioned windows of six, four and three lights. Two stacks to ridge.

Interior: Much timber-framing survives, possibly from an earlier building. There is a timbered arcade between the aisle and hall with posts and braces visible. Board and muntin panelling to ground floor and close studded wall to first floor. Similarly the division wall between hall and west-wing was formerly divided by a timber partition of which the closed aisled truss remains which is a king-post truss with the unusual feature of cusped braces to the ridge. The west-wing was entered from the hall by two separate doorways the southern of which remains its ogee doorhead. There does not appear to have been an inter-connecting door between the two rooms in the wing.

The northern room retains its original fireplace in the west wall with a Tudor arched lintel and simple chamfered surround. A post and braces run in front of a stone wall and below the closing truss of the hall. Between the chambers is a closed king-post truss with eight vertical struts. The king post truss in the East-wing is closed with six vertical struts and is the only one with a diagonally set ridge. The projecting rear wing would appear to have been the service end with kitchen and possibly loom shop. Though externally this building has been altered, internally is preserved a C16 timber-frame largely untouched.

South-east front has 3 room plan of 3 bays. Reads from left; C19 doorway with monolithic jambs. All are recessed chamfered mullioned windows of 5 lights with square reveals to both floors in 1st 2 bays with inserted window of 2 lights to 1st floor between windows. Drip course continues over ground floor windows of 1st 2 bays and over main entry door to right hand of 2nd bay which has doorway with plain composite jambs and inscribed lintel. Drip course terminates at junction of 3rd bay which has late C18 detail; doorway with monolithic jambs and thin flat faced mullioned windows of 4 lights to each floor. Quoins to left hand only which has coped gable with kneelers and large stack. 2 other stacks, at junction of bays. Originally this elevation indicates that the house was originally of 2 cells with gable stacks and a central stack with an added extra room in the later C18 to the right hand end. Left hand return wall is blind (rendered). Right hand return wall has single storey lean-to, an arched attic light (solid) and 2 single light windows to ground floor, one of which is sashed with 12 panes. The other has chamfered surround and hoodmould with straight return in the rear half of the pile which is rendered. This is the only C17 window and may indicate an earlier building on the site or be re-used. Long sloping cat slide roof to rear which is L shaped formed by late C18 extension to main range which has flat faced mullioned windows of 4 lights to each floor and doorway with monolithic jambs. Set back is main range which has recessed flat faced mullioned windows with square reveals of 3 lights and 4 lights with inserted C19 doorway with monolithic jambs to ground floor. It once had an engraved window inscribed: 'Peace be on this house bestowed: Peace on all that here reside. Let the unknown peace of God With the man of peace abide, - Nov. 4, 1807' (The Brighouse Echo, February 6, 1970).

One and a half storeys hall with two-storey wings. At the rear the central area has been built out to give a further two-storey wing. three room front of three bays with projecting two-storey gabled porch at junction of second and third bays forming a lobby entry. First bay has double chamfered mullioned windows with hoodmoulds of six lights to both floors. Lantern finial to apex under Which is blocked opening. Central hall bay has double chamfered mullioned and transomed window of sixteen lights with king-mullion. Three-course ashlar parapet is surmounted by lantern finials. Over window is hoodmould which continues round porch which has semi-circular arched doorway with moulded imposts and surround. Over is early C20 cross-window breaking into hoodmould. Lantern finial to apex.

Porch protects doorway with cyma recta-moulded surround, straight lintel with a step to centre of moulding over which is date carved in relief. Third bay is gabled and has early C20 cruciform window of twelve lights to ground floor with two cross-windows to first floor. Return wall is long range with a duality of two gables with two-span roof under the junction of which is doorway with decorated lintel. Drip course continues over windows to both floors which retain double chamfered mullioned windows of four and five lights. Rear has broad central gable of early C18, with three bays of cross-windows the right hand of which is tall staircase window. Quoins to the angles. The stair has turned balusters, a swept handrail and an open string set within a panelled hall. The east wing had originally two rooms, a parlour with its own external door and the north room was a kitchen. its cyma-moulded spine beams have scarf joints breaking on the line of an earlier firehood which was replaced by the present large kitchen fireplace. This has a shallow arched lintel inscribed 1726 IHA (Joseph and Ann Holmes) carried on corbelled jambs with a chamfered surround. The kitchen stair of late C17 has open fretwork on splat balusters, a moulded handrail and a closed string, probably re-used.
